i forgot who i sent things to already 8(
i’m basically just asking people ‘6 8 9 23 27’ tho which imo are some of the best questions
kelleydenham asked: 3, 25, 28
3: bastion bastion bastion bastion. honorable mentions: fez, assassin’s creed 2, arkham series, psychonauts, beyond good and evil, portal 2, etc etc etc
25: forever ago with AR for the GCN but the disc broke after about a week of trying it. i have messed around with cheat engine a couple times (mostly for trying to grind out the last few achievements in PC vanilla SF4) but generally a very very last resort

pretentious is the worst adjective to ever apply to anything
it’s legit just “affecting more worth than it has” which means you’re saying ‘i think it’s shit and going to be shit and trying to be more than shit is fooling itself’
the only actual pretentious games you’ll find are the dashed-off parodies of art games you’ll see on kongregate and the like occasionally and even those are trying to be pretentious
but anyway the concept of interactivity and the inherent ability to control your experience within a videogame are the main benefits of the medium, even if it is incredibly difficult and impossible to budget actually being able to massively change your experience as a part of the game itself. some games manage to do that (the witcher 2’s second act is completely and wholly different based on your story decision!) but it’s mostly at cost of development time that publishers would rather spend on content that, you know, all players that play through the game will actually see.
so with that in mind, i support games that poke at the idea that playing the game will always pretty much end in a given outcome. your choice to continue playing the game instead of shutting it off is (admittedly) always there, even if it does seem a bit silly to hope people will make the conscious effort to go “I am into this game and story enough to actively decide to stop playing it because I cannot bear to have my hands bloodied with virtual deaths.”
but really though, it does make a good story to have the player themselves feel in some part responsible for what happens. it’s something the medium does allow for! plus up until relatively recently a large chunk games still centered around the idea that players should just constantly have positive feedback from their games which is GOOD but is also preeeeeetty limited
but here jed

#17: i’m really honest about the games i play, there’s none really that i’d outright hide. i recommended magical diary ffs
#10: final fantasy tactics advance + advance wars for the gba i both tried really hard to get into but just completely fell flat on. i tend to be collectionist/completionist and making up my own strats for strategy games doesn’t really work out most of the time, so i just stopped

SOMEone doesn’t know how to do an ask meme >:V
amischiefofmice asked: 2 4 6 8 who do we appreciate!!! yoooooooooooou
2: double fine gimme all the double fine games. not the wisest decision honestly but i always appreciate what they do right over what they do wrong
4: snow white and the seven dwarves for the game boy color
6: portal was one of the first games that made me go ‘whoa dang this is doing Really Smart Things and i’m picking up on all of them’ and basically sent me off on really enjoying thinking and talking about game design! plus it was really great too. honorable mention goes to TF2 for getting me horribly into multiplayer online games to the point where i played it nightly for years

frictionlessemu asked: 19, 28
19: beyond good and evil (rip) - great protagonist, great potential for story, really solid gameplay/art design/music. joke answers: half life, pokemon snap
28: whoa dang that’s a neat question that I didn’t see the first time around. i’m not one to pay too much attention to the outfits my characters are wearing though and most of them wouldn’t Work on my body type. let’s go with windwaker link’s pajamas, those are cute
ohnoproblems asked: i'm gonna ask 8 i always ask 8 i love soundtracks. also, 22, sure
bastion, hands down. runners up: fez, persona 4, bully, beyond good and evil
what game would i immerse myself in? world of warcraft, tbh - it’d be Really Neat to see everything up close and real-sized & most other games i could think of wouldn’t really work too well
Anonymous asked: it's not one of those questions, but what video game protagonist have you empathized with the most?
that’s a hard question
like a legit hard question
empathizing with a protagonist is something I can’t really call up to mind examples of, sadly - a lot of the games I really really like and hold up as great either have basically blank slate protagonists or protags that are characters in their own right and don’t really work empathy-wise
i’ll say this, though: i’m still working on getting through the walking dead and that is definitely shaping up to fit that answer
also seriously i have good answers for nearly all of those videogame questions toss some at me

Me, On The Screen: Race in Animal Crossing: New Leaf
I’m sitting on my bed for the third day in a row.
I’m waiting for 5PM to hit so that I can finally close my 3DS. I’ve been ‘tanning’ my avatar in the latest entry of Nintendo’s long running Animal Crossing series, New Leaf. I put ‘tanning’ in scare quotes because the method doesn’t match my intention. Yes, I’m doing the the thing the game calls tanning, but my objective isn’t just darkening my avatar’s skin tone, it’s being able to see in the screen what I see in the mirror
